Bruce Newell

Director, Montana Library Network (retired)

Bruce Newell began and directed the Montana Library Network at the Montana State Library from 1999 to his retirement in October 2006. Previously, he worked in public and network services at the Lewis & Clark Library, Helena's public library, as an information system planner with Montana's Department of Administration, as a reference and library development librarian with the Montana State Library, and as Temporary County Librarian in Baker County, Oregon. He served as President of the Montana Library Association, receiving the MLA Sheila Cates Librarian of the Year Award.

Bruce continues to serve on a variety of local and statewide library-related committees and advisory groups. He is a volunteer librarian for St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Helena and has authored a number of papers for state and regional library publications and conferences. He joined the OCLC Board of Trustees in 2006. He believes that OCLC's greatest strength is its membership, and that collaboration is our key for connecting all the world's libraries' users to the richness of networked library content and services.

Bruce earned an MLS from the University of Washington in 1979 and a BS in Community Services and Public Affairs from the University of Oregon in 1975.
